Here we are almost a quarter of the way through 2017. You’re probably wondering where the years went and if the start of this new year hasn’t been good to you yet, here are seven tips to get yourself on the right track.
#1 Be More Grateful
I’m sure you’ve heard this one a million times, but I can’t even begin to convey the importance of gratitude. Taking the time to reflect on the things you’re truly grateful for is paramount, which is why it is my #1 recommendation for starting this year off right. Focusing on the things you’re grateful for not only puts your thoughts and mindset on the right path, but it has the power to manifest positive change in your life.
To really make this tip work you must spend time deeply reflecting on things you’re grateful for, and it can be anything, even something as simple as a drop of rain, or your heartbeat. Now, allow yourself to really feel and experience deep gratitude for it, and then say, “thank you.” It really doesn’t matter what it is, all that matters is that you take the time to focus on it and why you’re grateful for it.
#2 Exercise and Eat Healthier
If you haven’t already implemented some type of fitness routine and healthy diet in your life, NOW is the time to do so. It’s 2017, and let’s face it, you already know the benefits of exercise and healthy eating, and you also know what you should and should not be doing and eating. It’s time to hold yourself accountable! Don’t give yourself the excuse that healthy food doesn’t taste good and you don’t have time to exercise, or can’t afford a gym. This is the information age, and there’s a ton of information at your fingertips, for FREE, to guide you on how to eat healthy and workout properly, plus you DON’T need a gym to workout.
One suggestion I can make about exercising is to find some type of physical activity you enjoy doing because IF YOU DON’T ENJOY IT YOU WON’T STICK TO IT. Also, don’t think exercising is limited to working out in a conventional gym with weights, nothing could be further from the truth. There are many forms of physical activities that can help get you in shape, such as, sports, yoga, hiking, swimming, dancing, etc., it’s just a matter of finding something you enjoy doing.
#3 Set Obtainable Goals and Take Action
It’s important to feel like you are making progress in your life because if you’re not growing, you’re dying. There’s nothing worse than being stagnant and living through the same cycle of events repeatedly – that’s the definition of insanity!
Since this is an article about tips for a prosperous new “year”, you’ll want to focus on setting daily, weekly, or monthly goals, so that the sum equals your fabulous year. I recommend getting a notebook to keep track of your results. Start with your daily goals. Every day, choose about five things you want to achieve by the end of that day and write them down in your notebook. Next, write out the steps you need to take to achieve those goals. For example, if you want to read one book a month then you’ll need to read at least 10 pages a day. Write out, “read 10 pages of (book title)” and the time of day you will complete this goal. Do this for all five goals. Make sure all of your goals have a time element attached to it and refer to your list throughout the day crossing off each goal as you complete it.
Next, at the start of the week make a list of your weekly goals, then at the start of the month make a list of your monthly goals, and follow the same steps as your daily goals. Always make sure to attach an action plan and time frame to them. Your weekly and monthly goals can be a part of your daily goals.
The most important thing here is to get the ball rolling by taking action! Remember, it’s not what you tell people you’re doing, it’s what you’re really doing that makes the difference. Time only moves forward, so if you stay your path, then you will only get there.
#4 Do More for Yourself
Taking care of yourself should be a priority! If you’re not physically or mentally right, then how can you ever be truly productive in any other area of your life? I’ve personally been in many situations where I put others first or spent more time at work over-working myself to get the job done. In the end, I was super stressed and over exhausted and was no benefit to anything or anyone.
Make it a point to put yourself first. Go get that massage, that mani-pedi, that haircut, and color, invest in that workout program, take that desired vacation, and, most importantly, sleep more. Whether you’re looking to overcome a cold, build muscle, feel your best, or cure a disease, sleep is of the up most importance. This is where your body resets and heals itself, hence the saying, “sleeping beauty.”
At the end of the day, you being your best will yield the most results in all areas of your life!
If you don’t already practice some form of meditation, then consider this a must for you in this new year. There are many types of meditation techniques, but if you’re a beginner then practicing something as simple as mindfulness is a great place to start. Mindfulness is the state of being conscious or aware of something.
To practice this, simply begin by focusing and being mindful of what’s going on around you at the moment. What sounds do you hear? What scents do you smell? How do you feel? It’s important to focus on your senses and not your thoughts. Be mindful of everything that’s happening in and around you this very moment.
This is also a great exercise to practice in stressful situations, such as, sitting in heavy traffic or working against a tight deadline. It’s easy to do, but sometimes hard to remember to do in the heat of the moment; however, learning to calm your mind will help you to live a more peaceful life.
All things we experience happen in the present moment. If you think back to an event in your past, when it happened, it happened in the present, and if you think of the future, when it happens, it will happen in the present; therefore, all of life’s events only happen in the now, so it makes sense to stay in the present moment, it’s the only way we experience life to the fullest.
#6 Let Go of the Past
Not sure about you, but this tip was by far the hardest one for me to implement in my life. I had a bad habit of holding on to negative emotions and grudges. It wasn’t until I let go of the past that haunted me that I was finally able to start healing and living a better life. Letting go doesn’t mean that what happened to you is okay, it just means that you are now free to move on from whatever was holding you back.
To do this effectively, you need to consciously acknowledge all the people and events that are holding you back. Who has hurt you? What bad things have you experienced? Who and what are you feeling negative emotions towards? To let go, you need to reach the point of acceptance, and sometimes you may have to go through the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) to reach that point. Once you accept what has happened you can then make peace with it, and when you make peace with it, you’re free.
#7 Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
I’m sure we’ve all done this at some point in our lives, comparing ourselves and social status to others. I’m guilty of this one too, but nothing could be more damaging than staying fixated on how you believe everyone else’s life is better than yours. Yes, we all experience “life,” but everyone’s personal story is different. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to reach success (by your definition) all that really matters is that you reach it. The longer you compare yourself to other people the longer you prolong lasting positive change and the outcome you desire for your life.
Instead of using other people to gauge your success, try setting daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals, then compare your progress to each of these time frames; the results might surprise you, in a good way! If you find that you didn’t achieve one or a few of your goals, then see where you went wrong, you may just need to take different action steps to reach it.
One a side note, in all honesty, there’s a good possibility that the other people you’re comparing your life to, are not happy with their lives either, so don’t be fooled by how they “act” in public or what you see on their social media. In the end, you’ll realize the race is only with yourself.
